Almost a year after I began to blog on this story, the story of the Guardians is finally well underway. I have learned from my mistake on my horror novel Dark Medicine, and can tell that I have laid out too much plot for one book. I am already mentally trimming some of the subplots for future usage. The main plot was originally designed to be episodic with an overarching plot between episodes. Now, it appears that the episodes will evolve into separate books.
As things flow well for the this first installment in the story of the Guardians, I find myself thinking about faith. Faith in deities or a deity, the faith of the agnostic and the faith of the atheist. Some who read this entry may ask, how can the atheist who does not believe in religion or a deity have faith? My response is simple. Argue with one and try to prove that a divine being exists. Watch their arguments and body language. Then go and argue with a strong believer in whatever religion and try to convince them that they believe in nothing more than smoke and mirrors. You will see the same physical reactions and the same forcefulness in their arguments. (Yes, I am aware I am a troublemaker.)
No matter what someone believes to be true, faith in something’s existence or non-existence is a fundamental aspect of our existence. What would those beliefs be like in the future? Consider for a moment that you have no way of getting back to Earth and that, to your knowledge, the Earth’s existence may be nothing more than a tale of lost lands—like Atlantis or Mu—what would that do to the religion or it’s requirements? Think for a moment. You are living on an alien world (as compared to Earth). What would the dietary requirements of certain religions mean? What would be the requirement for prayer or pilgrimage? No offense is meant by these questions, just the question as to how man’s existence may change over the eons in the future and a pondering of how that future may effect the religions of man. Just as religious belief (or disbelief) effect today’s society around the global, so to will our existence in the future effect our beliefs and they effect us.
Some thoughts to ponder until next week’s blog.
