Looking at the World Today for the Future

After finishing Dark Medicine, I needed a break. Between the writing and mostly everything else in the community I am working on and my bill paying job, I pushed myself to the brink of burnout. I am back now and The Guardians is taking shape.

I am also taking this opportunity to inform my readers that I am re-looking at my bloging schedule. The purpose of these blogs is to inform, share, seek opinion and promote…but, before I went silent I felt my schedule was out of control and stealing the time I need to actually plot and write The Guardians. The weekends yields the most time I have to write, and I am posting blogs on the weekends…which shows that I have split my priorities. The novels should be my top priority. Later this week I will announce when I will move this blog to. At this time, I am pondering moving this and the blog for Dark Medicine to a weeknight.

There is no question in my mind anymore that The Guardians will be a Military Sci-Fi novel. However, I have decided to break with some of that tradition. Military Sci-Fi focuses on, among many other things, war. David Weber, whose Honor Harrington series I love, writes about a Napoleonic war in space. Orson Scott Card, David Feintuch, and Robert Heinlein…. write about leadership in war (as does David Weber). I realize that I am painting this picture with a very broad brush, as these four and others in the genre write about more than just what these few sentences convey. However, I am using it for a point and counterpoint.

Over the last decade or more, the world’s military forces of the superpowers have taken on a variety of roles beyond just warfare. It is in these new roles that I am exploring—the new age of the military and its ever changing roles in the governments they serve and the world in which we live in. If history is doomed to repeat itself, then the future should appear no different from the past and current history—only the names and places will change.
