Battling Burnout

I have written before about a friend of mine who once said “you have so many irons in the fire, if I didn’t see the smoke I would swear you had no fire left.” He almost was correct at the end of October—I almost did not have any fire left. I have been silent on this blog for weeks while I have been overcome with burnout. I completed the first draft of my horror novel, Dark Medicine , a collection of 53 poems and began to look at truly plotting out the science fiction novel The Guardians. On top of those things, I had an over loaded and over whelming last three months in the various events and activities I do outside of my bill paying job and my writing.

It highlighted that I was doing too much and not all of it was related to this career as a writer. I had to step away from it all—from these blogs, from my stories, my poems, and many of the community activities I am involved with (at least the ones I am not some kind of officer or in a leadership role in). Eventually, I took a long walk in the Missouri Botanical Gardens (www.mobot.org) and cleared my head and my soul. I thought long and hard about my priorities and my writing.

I am returning to blogging and working now on The Guardians. Once I finish the character sketches that I need to do. It does feel good to be writing again.

Thank you for reading and please visit www.davidalanlucas.com for updates to all of my writing and blogs.

You and I are two of a kind, David, always running a million directions. I'm glad you're back in the saddle and writing (riding?) again!

I totally relate to burn out as I've had the same issue lately. Too many active writing projects at once is not a good thing! Glad that you were able to take a few hours to slow down and examine your priorities. We all need to do that sometimes and I'm so glad you were successful. Glad you're back to writing! Can't wait to see more!
